There are 16 taxpayer rights, 8 relate to service:

  • You have the right to be treated professionally, courteously, and fairly (Right number 5)
  • You have the right to complete, accurate, clear, and timely information (Right number 6)
  • You have the right to lodge a service complaint and to be provided with an explanation of our findings (Right number 9)
  • You have the right to have the costs of compliance taken into account when administering tax legislation (Right number 10)
  • You have the right to expect us to be accountable (Right number 11)
  • You have the right to expect us to publish our service standards and report annually (Right number 13)
  • You have the right to expect us to warn you about questionable tax schemes in a timely manner (Right number 14)
  • You have the right to be represented by a person of your choice (Right number 15)

It may also be used for any purpose related to the enforcement of the Act such as audit, compliance and collection activities. It may be shared or verified with other federal, provincial, territorial or foreign government institutions to the extent authorized by law. Under the Privacy Act, individuals have the right to access, or request corrections of, their personal information, or to file a complaint with the Privacy Commissioner of Canada regarding the handling of their personal information.
